COURSE DESCRIPTION
This is an introductory collegelevel English language and composition course designed
to ensure that students “write effectively and confidently in their college courses across
the curriculum and in their professional and personal lives.” (The College Board, AP
English Course Description, May, 2010 p.6). While such a goal may seem straightforward,
becoming an effective writer is by no means a linear pursuit, for it requires the mastery of
several elements simultaneously. In this course, we will not only master the grammar and
mechanics of standard English, but we will gain a greater awareness through our reading and
writing “of the interactions among a writer’s purposes, audience expectations, and subjects
as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contribute to the
effectiveness in writing.” (The College Board, AP English Course Description, May, 2010. p.6)
