COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is an introductory college prep English language and composition course designed to ensure that students “write to communicate a variety of purposes.” (Illinois State Board of Education).  While such a goal may seem straightforward, becoming an effective writer is by no means a linear pursuit, for it requires the mastery of several elements simultaneously.   In this course, we will not only master the grammar and mechanics of standard English, but we will gain a greater awareness of how the English language impacts others’ perception of us and, ultimately, our success in this world.  We will learn how to effectively use technology to communicate, whether through blog, email, Word document, or webpage.  We will expand our vocabularies, thereby also expanding our ability to think critically about contemporary issues. Most importantly, we will gain respect for language’s power and ability, both in the classroom and in modern society.
